Topaz bead example

This guide separates established mineral names from jewellery trade names. Material, treatment and source can vary between suppliers, so the exact beads in a finished piece should always take priority.

What is Topaz?

Topaz is a crystalline aluminium silicate that occurs in colourless, yellow, blue, pink and other colours. Many blue topaz gems are treated to obtain their colour.

Colour, pattern and what to look for

Topaz has a bright lustre and can be very clear, but colour and treatment should be described accurately. Its strong cleavage means a clean-looking stone can still split from a sharp blow.

Traditional meanings of Topaz

In crystal traditions, Topaz is associated with wisdom, clarity. Meanings vary between traditions and can be a personal way of choosing a gift or marking an intention.

These associations describe beliefs and symbolism, rather than established medical effects. Jewellery does not treat health conditions.

Care and buying notes for Topaz

Topaz is Mohs 8 but has cleavage and can fracture. Use warm soapy water, avoid hard impacts and protect it from sudden temperature changes.

For treatment questions, read the guide to natural, dyed and imitation gemstones and ask Shirley about the materials in a particular design. If you want a different combination or size, use the custom crystal bracelet builder.
