Selenite
Meaning & Jewellery.
Learn what Selenite is, how its colour and pattern form, what to check when buying it, how to care for it and how it is used in jewellery.

This guide separates established mineral names from jewellery trade names. Material, treatment and source can vary between suppliers, so the exact beads in a finished piece should always take priority.
What is Selenite?
Selenite is the transparent or translucent variety of gypsum, a hydrated calcium sulphate. It is very soft and should not be confused with the much harder quartz varieties sometimes sold under similar names.
Colour, pattern and what to look for
Clear, white or satin-like translucence and fibrous sheen are characteristic. Polished beads can show internal lines and a soft glow rather than glassy brilliance.
Traditional meanings of Selenite
In crystal traditions, Selenite is associated with healing. Meanings vary between traditions and can be a personal way of choosing a gift or marking an intention.
These associations describe beliefs and symbolism, rather than established medical effects. Jewellery does not treat health conditions.

Care and buying notes for Selenite
Gypsum is about Mohs 2 and can be damaged by water, scratches and abrasion. Keep selenite dry and wipe only with a soft dry cloth.
For treatment questions, read the guide to natural, dyed and imitation gemstones and ask Shirley about the materials in a particular design. If you want a different combination or size, use the custom crystal bracelet builder.
