Learn what Rhodochrosite is, how its colour and pattern form, what to check when buying it, how to care for it and how it is used in jewellery.

Rhodochrosite bead example

This guide separates established mineral names from jewellery trade names. Material, treatment and source can vary between suppliers, so the exact beads in a finished piece should always take priority.

What is Rhodochrosite?

Rhodochrosite is manganese carbonate, recognised by pink to red colour and, in banded material, alternating pale and darker layers. It is softer than most quartz jewellery.

Colour, pattern and what to look for

Banded beads may show rose, white and red arcs, while solid pink material has a pearly to vitreous polish. Natural veining and cavities are common.

Traditional meanings of Rhodochrosite

In crystal traditions, Rhodochrosite is associated with love. Meanings vary between traditions and can be a personal way of choosing a gift or marking an intention.

These associations describe beliefs and symbolism, rather than established medical effects. Jewellery does not treat health conditions.

Care and buying notes for Rhodochrosite

Rhodochrosite is about Mohs 3.5–4.5 and reacts with acids. Keep it dry, away from perfume and harder stones, and clean with a soft dry cloth.

For treatment questions, read the guide to natural, dyed and imitation gemstones and ask Shirley about the materials in a particular design. If you want a different combination or size, use the custom crystal bracelet builder.
