Obsidian bead example

This guide separates established mineral names from jewellery trade names. Material, treatment and source can vary between suppliers, so the exact beads in a finished piece should always take priority.

What is Obsidian?

Obsidian is natural volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools too quickly for large crystals to grow. Its smooth surface can be black, brown, green or patterned.

Colour, pattern and what to look for

A polished black bead may show subtle flow lines, sheen or tiny bubbles. Obsidian can fracture with sharp, shell-like edges even though it feels hard.

Traditional meanings of Obsidian

In crystal traditions, Obsidian is associated with grounding, protection. Meanings vary between traditions and can be a personal way of choosing a gift or marking an intention.

These associations describe beliefs and symbolism, rather than established medical effects. Jewellery does not treat health conditions.

Care and buying notes for Obsidian

Obsidian is roughly Mohs 5–5.5. Avoid sharp impacts, temperature shock and abrasive storage; wipe with a soft cloth.

For treatment questions, read the guide to natural, dyed and imitation gemstones and ask Shirley about the materials in a particular design. If you want a different combination or size, use the custom crystal bracelet builder.
