Lapis Lazuli bead example

This guide separates established mineral names from jewellery trade names. Material, treatment and source can vary between suppliers, so the exact beads in a finished piece should always take priority.

What is Lapis Lazuli?

Lapis lazuli is a blue rock made mainly of lazurite with calcite, pyrite and other minerals. It is not a single mineral, and the balance of blue, white and gold varies.

Colour, pattern and what to look for

Deep blue body colour with small pyrite flecks is sought after, while white calcite veining is natural. Very uniform or unusually vivid colour may indicate dye or treatment.

Traditional meanings of Lapis Lazuli

In crystal traditions, Lapis Lazuli is associated with wisdom, clarity. Meanings vary between traditions and can be a personal way of choosing a gift or marking an intention.

These associations describe beliefs and symbolism, rather than established medical effects. Jewellery does not treat health conditions.
