Howlite
Meaning & Jewellery.

Learn what Howlite is, how its colour and pattern form, what to check when buying it, how to care for it and how it is used in jewellery.

Howlite bead example

This guide separates established mineral names from jewellery trade names. Material, treatment and source can vary between suppliers, so the exact beads in a finished piece should always take priority.

What is Howlite?

Howlite is a white to grey borate mineral with a porous texture and characteristic grey web-like veins. It is often dyed, especially to imitate turquoise.

Colour, pattern and what to look for

Natural howlite is usually white or pale grey; blue, green or other vivid colours should be treated as possible dye rather than assumed natural colour.

Traditional meanings of Howlite

In crystal traditions, Howlite is associated with healing. Meanings vary between traditions and can be a personal way of choosing a gift or marking an intention.

These associations describe beliefs and symbolism, rather than established medical effects. Jewellery does not treat health conditions.

Care and buying notes for Howlite

At about Mohs 3.5, howlite scratches readily. Keep it away from water, perfume, oils and harder gems; clean gently with a dry or barely damp cloth.

For treatment questions, read the guide to natural, dyed and imitation gemstones and ask Shirley about the materials in a particular design. If you want a different combination or size, use the custom crystal bracelet builder.
