Meaning & Jewellery.

Learn what Garnet is, how its colour and pattern form, what to check when buying it, how to care for it and how it is used in jewellery.

Garnet bead example

This guide separates established mineral names from jewellery trade names. Material, treatment and source can vary between suppliers, so the exact beads in a finished piece should always take priority.

What is Garnet?

Garnet is a group of related silicate minerals rather than one single species. Red almandine and pyrope are familiar, but garnet also occurs in orange, green, pink and other colours.

Colour, pattern and what to look for

Colour, transparency and the identity of the garnet group member affect appearance. Beads may be translucent, included or deep and opaque, all of which can be natural characteristics.

Traditional meanings of Garnet

In crystal traditions, Garnet is associated with grounding, protection. Meanings vary between traditions and can be a personal way of choosing a gift or marking an intention.

These associations describe beliefs and symbolism, rather than established medical effects. Jewellery does not treat health conditions.

Care and buying notes for Garnet

Garnets range roughly from Mohs 6.5 to 7.5. Warm soapy water is safest; avoid hard knocks and use caution with ultrasonic cleaning if fractures or inclusions are present.

For treatment questions, read the guide to natural, dyed and imitation gemstones and ask Shirley about the materials in a particular design. If you want a different combination or size, use the custom crystal bracelet builder.
