Meaning & Jewellery.

Learn what Emerald is, how its colour and pattern form, what to check when buying it, how to care for it and how it is used in jewellery.

Emerald bead example

This guide separates established mineral names from jewellery trade names. Material, treatment and source can vary between suppliers, so the exact beads in a finished piece should always take priority.

What is Emerald?

Emerald is the green variety of beryl, coloured mainly by chromium and/or vanadium. Natural emerald commonly contains inclusions, traditionally described as its “jardin”.

Colour, pattern and what to look for

Colour is usually more important than perfect clarity in emerald. Look for a lively green, an even polish and disclosure of oiling or other treatment; heavily included material needs extra care.

Traditional meanings of Emerald

In crystal traditions, Emerald is associated with love. Meanings vary between traditions and can be a personal way of choosing a gift or marking an intention.

These associations describe beliefs and symbolism, rather than established medical effects. Jewellery does not treat health conditions.

Care and buying notes for Emerald

Emerald is Mohs 7.5–8 but can be brittle because of fractures. Use warm soapy water only; avoid steam, ultrasonic cleaners, heat and sudden impacts.

For treatment questions, read the guide to natural, dyed and imitation gemstones and ask Shirley about the materials in a particular design. If you want a different combination or size, use the custom crystal bracelet builder.
