Carnelian is orange to red chalcedony, with colour commonly associated with iron. It belongs to the quartz family and may grade from translucent orange to opaque rust-red.

Good carnelian has a warm, even polish, but cloudy zones and darker red patches are natural. Holding a bead against light can reveal translucent edges.
