Bloodstone bead example

This guide separates established mineral names from jewellery trade names. Material, treatment and source can vary between suppliers, so the exact beads in a finished piece should always take priority.

What is Bloodstone?

Bloodstone, also called heliotrope, is a dark green chalcedony with red jasper or iron-oxide inclusions. The red spots are natural mineral markings, not liquid blood.

Colour, pattern and what to look for

The contrast between a deep green body and red flecks varies from almost plain to heavily spotted. Opaque beads often show a waxy to vitreous polish.

Traditional meanings of Bloodstone

In crystal traditions, Bloodstone is associated with grounding, protection. Meanings vary between traditions and can be a personal way of choosing a gift or marking an intention.

These associations describe beliefs and symbolism, rather than established medical effects. Jewellery does not treat health conditions.

Care and buying notes for Bloodstone

Chalcedony is generally around Mohs 6.5–7. Keep it away from harder stones and harsh chemicals, and clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.

For treatment questions, read the guide to natural, dyed and imitation gemstones and ask Shirley about the materials in a particular design. If you want a different combination or size, use the custom crystal bracelet builder.
