Banded Agate
Meaning & Jewellery.
Learn what Banded Agate is, how its colour and pattern form, what to check when buying it, how to care for it and how it is used in jewellery.

This guide separates established mineral names from jewellery trade names. Material, treatment and source can vary between suppliers, so the exact beads in a finished piece should always take priority.
What is Banded Agate?
Banded agate is chalcedony in which layers of silica create visible stripes, arcs or concentric patterns. The bands may be fine and parallel or broad and irregular.
Colour, pattern and what to look for
Rotate a bead in the light to see translucency at the edges and the way bands continue through the cut surface. Natural banding is often more interesting than perfectly uniform colour.
Traditional meanings of Banded Agate
In crystal traditions, Banded Agate is associated with grounding, protection. Meanings vary between traditions and can be a personal way of choosing a gift or marking an intention.
These associations describe beliefs and symbolism, rather than established medical effects. Jewellery does not treat health conditions.

Care and buying notes for Banded Agate
Agate is usually about Mohs 6.5–7. Avoid storing it with harder gems, prolonged heat and abrasive cleaners. A soft cloth with warm water is sufficient for routine care.
For treatment questions, read the guide to natural, dyed and imitation gemstones and ask Shirley about the materials in a particular design. If you want a different combination or size, use the custom crystal bracelet builder.
