What is Amethyst?

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. Its colour can range from pale lilac to deep violet, with iron and natural irradiation contributing to the colour; heat can alter or remove purple tones.

Colour, pattern and what to look for

Look for an even polish, attractive violet colour and natural zoning or inclusions that give the beads character. Quartz is Mohs 7, but dust and grit can still scratch a polished surface.

What is amethyst?

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. GIA gives it a Mohs hardness of 7, but hardness does not make it immune to scratches or damage. Strong heat and prolonged intense light can affect its colour.

Care and buying notes for Amethyst

Warm soapy water is safest. Avoid heat, abrupt temperature changes and prolonged intense light; GIA lists amethyst at Mohs 7 with good toughness but notes that steam cleaning is not recommended.
